Hot Cocoa for Your Chocolate Fix

Hot Cocoa

Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  2. 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar
  3. pinch of salt
  4. 1 cup milk
  5. 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. arshmallows

Method

  1. Combine cocoa and sugar with about 2 tablespoons of milk in a saucepan.
  2. Whisk over medium-low heat until the ingredients dissolve.
  3. Gently stream in the rest of the milk as you whisk the mixture on medium heat. Keep stirring until it is hot and add vanilla extract.
  4. For froth, blend in a blender.
  5. Pour into your mug, add a pinch of salt, marshmallows and enjoy.

Homemade Golden Milk

Haldi doodh has gone international, guy and gals. The humble drink, that our elders have recommended for decades, has been rebranded. It is now sold as something that speaks to all the hipsters out there. Prepare this version without having to leave the comfort of your cozy home.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup milk
  2. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  3. a dash of ground cinnamon
  4. a pinch of ground ginger
  5. 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  6. 1-2 tsp honey
  7. a pinch of ground black pepper

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blitz for 15 seconds.
  2. Add this mixture into a pot and slowly bring to a simmer.
  3. Turn the heat off and pour the mixture into a mug.
  4. For latte consistency, use a milk frother and then serve.

Masala Chai

Masala Chai

Chai has been a staple drink across the subcontinent for what feels like forever. This masala chai is the perfect hot beverage recipe for December.

Ingredients

For the chai:

  1. 1/2 cup milk
  2. 1/2 cup water
  3. 1 to 2 tsp sugar
  4. 1/4 chai masala
  5. a tea bag

For the chai masala:

  1. 3 tbsp cloves
  2. 1/3 cup cardamoms
  3. 1 tbsp black peppercorns
  4. 2 sticks of cinnamon
  5. 1/3 cup dried ginger
  6. 1 tsp nutmeg powder

Method

For the chai masala:

  1. Take the cloves, cardamom, black peppercorns, and cinnamon and heat them on a non-stick frying pan for 1 minute.
  2. Set aside the ingredients on a plate.
  3. Once cooled, put the ingredients (plus the ginger) in a grinder and blend into a fine powder.
  4. Store in an air-tight jar and use whenever you’d like.

For the chai:

  1. Combine all the ingredients into a saucepan on medium heat.
  2. Heat till tiny bubbles appear on the surface.
  3. Stir the chai to avoid the milk from scalding.
  4. When the mixture starts to boil, remove from heat and stir.
  5. Boil once again, remove from heat and stir.
  6. For a few minutes, let the chai steep.
  7. Strain into your mug and voila!
